INTRODUCTION
Detox has to be a commitment you make to yourself for the rest of your life. It has to start as a state of mind, a promise you make to yourself to remain conscientious about yourself and your life. You have to learn to be aware of what you put in and on your body and realize that those things have an affect on your health. You have to learn to be alert and responsive of the toxins in your environment and take responsibility for the health of your community, country and planet. We all live in an interconnected world with all life connected to other life. By joining organizations that aim to clean and detoxify the planet, like the NRDC and Green Peace, you are helping the world detoxify and in so helping yourself.
Make sure that once you have made a commitment to healthy living and making detox a part of your life that you have a strong support team to back you up. We all need people around us that believe and support what we do in life, and it is no different with detoxification. Detox can be a hard, long process, and people in your life need to know what you are doing and what it is all about. Once you commit to detox and a healthier lifestyle you'll find that other people become very curious about what you are doing and want to now all about it. Be informed and inform those around you who are interested about what you are doing.
1. Eat Healthy
Avoid processed, fried and fast foods. Not only do many of these foods lack the nutrients we require they are also energetically dead and provide no beneficial energy to our bodies. Foods high in mercury and other heavy metals like fish should be monitored carefully (see article on mercury toxicity). Try eating only natural or organic foods. Also try eating lots of fruits and vegetables high in natural vitamins and minerals. Try to limit red meat and dairies as they are often high in toxic substances such as hormones and antibiotics. The key to a healthy diet is variety and balance. Try eating a wide variety of fresh foods and keeping everything in moderation.
2. Get plenty of exercise
Especially aerobic exercise like running, walking, swimming, etc. Exercise pumps nutrient rich blood to our organs and collects toxins from our cells and organs for processing and elimination. In addition, sweating helps eliminate toxins from our body through the skin in the form of sweat.
3. Drink plenty of water
Water can be said to be the number one overall body detoxifier. By drinking plenty of water, we are providing our bodies with the necessary material it needs to flush and drain the toxins out of our bodies in the form of urine and sweat. Without water our bodies are missing a major vehicle with which to excrete the toxins in our bodies. Try avoiding tap water and drink bottled water (but make sure the source of bottled water is a natural spring). Tap water is usually high in chlorine, fluoride and some cases pathogens like bacteria. Using good water filters like a Brita® filter can help clean up tap water and give you peace of mind.
4. Beware of what you put on as well as into your body
Buy all natural, organic products that are safe for the environment. Many companies are turning to organic natural cosmetics and cleaning products. The cosmetics and products we put on our skin and hair gets absorbed into our bodies as if we were to ingest it directly. Avoid cosmetics that contain petrochemicals (chemical derivatives from petroleum) as these can be highly toxic (some even mimic the effects of dangerous neurotoxins in the body). Also be aware of the cleaning products you use. Many of them are highly toxic if inhaled, ingested or placed on the skin. Try buying natural cleaning products that do not pollute the environment and are safe for our bodies.
5. Keep learning
Life is a learning process and one should never stop learning. Read books
about alternative, holistic therapies, detoxification and natural living. Try researching local health food stores and local farmers markets. These places are invaluable meetings spots for people concerned with healthy living and also great places to get fresh, natural, organic wholesome foods. If you would like to see an article on a topic that is currently not on Innovative Medicine.com, please feel free to contact us and tell us what information you would like to read about.
6. Make regular visits to your health care practitioners to monitor your overall health
Only a licensed professional can accurately determine if you are overly toxic and require detoxification. Create a health care team for yourself that you consult regularly with. Your team should ideally include a holistic medical practitioner, holistic dentist, nutritionist, personal trainer and anyone else you can find to help you with your health goals.
7. Partake in a yearly or semi-yearly detoxification
Doing a whole body detox now and again is a great way to maintain overall health and keep your body free from toxic overload. Our bodies are like cars, and like a car we need periodic oil changes (detox) to function properly. Click here to find our more about the types of detoxification programs you can do.
8. Take proper supplementation
Supporting the body's own detoxification process with natural supplements can be great ways to give your body a healthy detox boast. Just like the car that needs an oil change, a finely tuned car uses quality oil that best suits the cars requirements. A healthy person needs supplements that best suit their detoxification needs.
