Detox as a Way of Life

We are living in a sea of toxins. It’s literally all around us. From the food we eat, to the air we breathe, there is contamination to some degree with toxic substances everywhere. People can be seen as boats floating in a sea of toxins. For healthy people, their boats are strong yachts that keep them afloat through the worst storms. These healthy individuals utilize their body’s natural detoxification process and can adequately remove toxins. However, for some people, their boats are ill equipped to handle a toxic sea and they begin to sink like a row boat with a hole in the bottom (equivalent to becoming seriously ill). These people become overloaded and their bodies’ normal detoxification processes are no longer able to keep the toxins at bay.

There are many reasons why these people can no longer handle the toxic load. Some people are born with a greater genetic predisposition to chemical sensitivity and are affected by toxins more. Some people have compromised detoxification and elimination pathways such as damaged livers due to bacterial, viral or parasitic infections. Some people have compromised immune systems due to stress overload which results in an overall body breakdown and an inability to self regulate toxins effectively. Whatever it may be, many of us are in need of detoxification.

Basically, the goal of any detox program is to help the body excrete and eliminate the toxins that have built up in the body and support and restore the major detoxifying organs of the body (such as the liver and kidneys) to their optimal functioning states.

Even if you are a healthy person showing few to zero symptoms of illness or disease, maintenance and prevention are very important. In addition, periodic detoxification of ones body is critical to maintaining optimal health and wellness. No matter how healthy you are, if you consume more toxins than your body can handle, your body will become overloaded and illness will result.

The number of toxins in our lives is staggering and can be overwhelming to someone learning about them for the first time. Toxins can be categorized into two main groups: Internal toxins (endotoxins produced inside of our bodies as by products of chemical processes) and External toxins (exotoxins produced by external sources and consumed by us). Toxins can also be classified by the level of control we have over them. Many toxins are outside of our immediate control such as airborne toxins from cars and factories. Other toxins originating in the food we eat or toxins from cosmetic products we put on our skin are very much within our control.

The most important step in detoxification is informing yourself about the topic and gaining quality knowledge on what you need to do in order to retain and maintain optimal health. It is our number one goal at Innovative Medicine.com to provide you with this knowledge. The more you inform your self about toxins and toxic exposure, the more you will have the ability to make healthy choices and reduce your toxic intake.

*It should be noted that detoxification is not for everyone. Children, women who are nursing, pregnant women, the elderly and seriously ill should not partake in a self administered detox program without the express consent of their health care professional. It is also recommended that you see your health care professional before partaking in any detoxification program.*
