The process of making homeopathic remedies is very distinct and important. First, a specific herb, plant or mineral is dissolved in pharmaceutical grade alcohol (beet alcohol is sometimes used rather than ethyl alcohol for desired alkaloids) and a mother tincture is produced. From this mother tincture, the succussion process begins. Succussion is a term used for homeopathics that deals with banging or shaking of a remedy by machine or preferably by hand. This process of succussion is continued after every dilution until the desired potency is achieved. The more succussed and diluted a remedy, the more powerful and deeper acting medicine is produced which is released as kinetic energy without toxicity. Under The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), most natural supplements, including herbal and homeopathic, are not required to undergo the same testing that the FDA requires of synthetic pharmaceuticals. The law allows the manufacturers of these homeopathic and herbal medications to bypass the expensive bureaucratic mess that synthetic pharmaceuticals have to undergo. On the one hand, this is beneficial for the natural medicine arena, yet on the other, it allows for many unscrupulous vendors to go unchecked.
