The global panic over the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has reached an alarming level. Unfortunately, many individuals get their education from the media, which induces panic, is often unreliable, and not based on scientifically-sound information. Innovative Medicine’s focus is your health and well-being and we want you to know the facts to protect you and your family. From efficient hand washing to immune-boosting supplementation IM wants to help end the need to panic.

Learning from Biology, Not the Media

Coronavirus is not a new virus, nor is it new to causing infection in humans. Researchers discovered the first coronavirus in 1937 and since then several strains from different origins (animals, humans, birds, and geographical locations) have emerged. Coronavirus, along with Rhinovirus, are the two leading viruses that cause the common cold, and while Covid-19 is a novel strain making headlines, the molecular biology of the virus is generally the same.

“Coronavirus” is derived from the Latin word “corona” which means “crown” due to the characteristics, or morphology of the virion; proteins stick out from the surface, creating the appearance of a crown or halo. A very important component of Coronavirus is its viral envelope, a membrane protein coating that is important in the viral life cycle, our symptom longevity, and the prevention of infection. A viral envelope makes developing a vaccine difficult and also makes our immune system work harder to fight the virus. However, proper handwashing can break down the lipid-based envelope while it is still outside of the host, making handwashing the single most important step for infection prevention.

The coronavirus gets its name from its crown-like appearance.

First lines of defense against all pathogens are keeping hands clean, avoid touching your face with your hands, and sneezing and coughing into an elbow rather than in the hand. Furthermore, since it is possible for the virus to live outside of a host for arguably 12-24 hours, is expelled and spread through droplets from sneezing or coughing (essentially landing on the floor), removing shoes at the door and spraying the bottom of them with a natural disinfectant or soapy water can help prevent tracking the virus through your home一especially if you have small children who play there.

Even with the most cautious habits, sometimes the virus prevails. IM has taken the time to list researched supplements that strengthen our already sophisticated immune system and help fight pathogenic invaders.  Each supplement recommendation comes straight from the medical minds at NYCIM, and most of the staff here at IM takes them too. Though none of these will be a cure-all or a vaccine, they’ll naturally boost your system to put it in peak fighting shape.
