What is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is a form of mouth cleaning that stems from Ayurvedic medicine. By swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth (rigorously) for twenty minutes, the oil draws out the lipid-enclosed toxins and bacteria that cause tooth decay, gingivitis, and strep throat.
Over 600 different species of bacteria have been detected in the oral cavity and nearly all feed off sugary and starchy foods. Traditionally, oil pulling has also been used to treat bleeding gums, tooth decay, dry mouth, bad breath, and dry lips.
How Does it Work?
When coconut oil is partially broken down from enzymes in the mouth, it mimics an environment like the digestive tract and is capable of neutralizing plaque and other harmful microbes.
But beyond just cleaning out the mouth, coconut oil also detoxifies the body and boosts immune health. By removing harmful microbes, oil pulling has shown to prevent the conditions associated with poor oral hygiene, including arterial plaque and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Why Coconut Oil?
Although sesame, sunflower, and olive oil can also be used, coconut is the most popular because it is generally the least acidic and minimally processed. In these more acidic oils the acid breakdowns tooth enamel and speeds up decay and can even breakdown fillings.
But more alkaline coconut oil can help the teeth remineralize while strengthening gums, whitening teeth, and removing plaque. According to Dr. Joy Reese, VP and co-founder of The Skinny and Skinny & Co, coconut oil can replace regular brushing and flossing, and whiten and strengthen teeth in as little as thirty days.
