The Root Canal Controversy
Root canals are somewhat of a controversial topic in dentistry, both for their counterintuitive nature of “saving a dead organ” as well as for their connection to cardiovascular problems later in life. Although there is conflicting research on this front, it is undebatable that root canals allow dangerous bacteria to begin growing in the mouth and then spread throughout the rest of the body.
If you aren’t aware, it’s important to note that your teeth are organs exactly like your liver, stomach, and intestines are organs. Like all organs, we cannot separate our teeth from the rest of the body and must understand that when something is wrong with our teeth, something is wrong with our body as a whole, whether it be our gut, our liver, or our other organs of elimination.
What is a Root Canal?
When a cavity progresses to the point that the tooth is completely rotted, then the infected tooth is removed and the nerve, blood vessels, and lymph tissue are all cleaned out and replaced with dental fillings, usually toxic amalgams that may contain cadmium, silver, copper, and mercury.
According to biological dentists, the problem here is twofold: the preservation of a dead organ and the use of toxic amalgams that may enter the bloodstream and cause heavy metal toxicity.
The Biological Dentistry Approach
In our conversation with biological dentist and author Dr. Dominik Nischwitz, he explains why he removes all root canals whether or not they are causing noticeable symptoms. According to Dr. Dominik, all root canals will eventually contribute to health problems.
As root canals are not functional but more aesthetic and to some degree, financial in nature, the importance of this procedure is very much overblown, oversold, and even misleading to patients. By carefully removing all root canals and taking the necessary precautions to prevent heavy metal exposure, Dr. Dominik helps to literally remove the root cause and puts in place protocols to restore the patient’s optimal health.
Under the motto, “the mouth as a mirror for health”, Dr. Dominik belongs to a school of biological dentists that look more closely at the basic principles of chemistry, physics, and biochemistry and establishes a firm link between chronic systemic diseases and disorders of the oral cavity.
