The Health Benefits of Oil Pulling
Oil pulling (also known as Karach’s therapy) is an ancient practice that is receiving recent interest due to it becoming an adjunct in people’s oral hygiene and wellness routine. The practice has been used for thousands of years as an Ayurvedic Indian folk remedy that traditionally used sesame or sunflower oil.
Why Dentists Advise Oil Pulling
The oral cavity is full of jawbone cavitations that can be a source for hidden dental infections. When oil pulling, the constant swishing movement of the oil helps to stimulate the lymphatic system and therefore increases detoxification, removes bacteria, and clears blockages from the meridian pathways that are connected to our organs.
Benefits of oil pulling include:
• Removes metabolic acids
• Increases detoxification
• Stimulates acupuncture points
• Removes bacteria and toxins
• Extremely helpful with dental health
• Naturally whitens teeth, freshens breath, and improves gum health
Which Oil Should You Use?
Coconut oil has been found to be an ideal choice due to the lauric acid binding with the bacteria in the mouth during the “pulling” process. Benefits include removing metabolic acids, increasing detoxification, removing bacteria and toxins, improving dental/gum health, naturally whitening teeth, and freshening breath. At Innovative Medicine, we recommend using Skinny Coconut Oil as it is the only alkaline coconut oil on the market and one that Dr. Thomas Szulc (Medical Director, NYCIM) and the medical team at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine tested as very high quality.
In addition, the oil is wild harvested, single origin coconut oil. The special processing of the oil via a patented Nutralock System crafts the coconut oil under 97 degrees F, which leaves all of the raw nutrients intact. This process results in coconut oil with higher levels of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and allows the body to absorb the oil much easier, enhancing its effectiveness.

How to Oil Pull
You should oil pull first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything for the day. Simply place up to a tablespoon of Skinny Coconut Oil (or other high quality coconut oil) in your mouth and allow it to melt (can place it between your cheek and teeth or between your lips and teeth to speed this process), then begin to swish the oil around in your mouth. Without swallowing or gargling the oil, move the oil around your mouth, teeth, and gums for 5 to 20 minutes (you can start at 5 minutes and work your way up). A great way to build this into your routine is to oil pull while you are in the shower. When you are ready to finish, spit the oil into a disposable cup or in the trashcan – not into the sink or toilet. Because coconut oil solidifies when cold, this can create build up over time in your drain. Rinse your mouth out with warm water and brush your teeth as usual. That’s it! This simple technique is just one of the many ways to live a healthier, more abundant life.
