The Best Diet for Crohn’s Disease?
What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disease affecting different parts of the digestive tract, specifically the small and large intestines.
Once diagnosed, Crohn’s is usually chronic with occasional flareups and periods of remission. Symptoms of Crohn’s can range from abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea to weight loss, painful bowel movements, fatigue, and eventual malnutrition.
Although there is no certified cure for Crohn’s, certain therapies can reduce symptoms and stave off potentially fatal infections.
Eating for Crohn’s disease
Yet As Crohn’s Crusader Trevor Zabar learned, Crohn’s disease is not only manageable but reversible with proper diet and lifestyle.
There are some general lifestyle habits that individuals with Crohn’s disease should follow, including proper hydration and eliminating the foods that cause flareups. Some common triggers include refined sugars and starches, sugar alcohols, lactose, caffeine, and alcohol, and foods high in saturated fat.
The plant-based solution
But according to Trevor, a plant-based diet was the real answer to his recovery. By reducing the amount of sugar, sodium, saturated fat, and protein, Trevor simultaneously fed his microbiome and allowed the inflammation to subside enough so that his gut could begin to heal.
Additionally, Trevor attributes the introduction of fermented foods, especially kefir, as the missing piece in his recovery.
A probiotic drink that has been consumed across the world for literally centuries, kefir contains the most live probiotics of any food.
If you’re just constantly on a plant-based diet, you’re going to get better. You know, you’re gonna get better symptoms. Your skin will get better. You’ll feel better. If you take care of your nutritional requirements, like B12…you’ll feel great.”
