Why You Should Detox Before Trying to Get Pregnant
Infertility is on the rise globally, and it doesn’t discriminate between sexes, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or geographic location. While many factors can contribute to conception complications, toxic load is a fertility factor that should be addressed before trying to conceive.
Why a Pre-Pregnancy Detox Is a Good Idea
Unfortunately, toxin exposure is an ever-present occurrence. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the household and cosmetic products we use can all contain toxins, some of which can affect your hormones. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are toxins that mimic or interfere with normal hormone balance, a crucial element for successful conception. Examples of EDCs include BPAs (found in plastic), PFAs (found in nonstick pans and textile coating), phthalates (found in nail polish and hairspray), and triclosan (found in antimicrobial and personal care products).
A 2022 study found that heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and copper caused infertility in couples through mechanisms such as changes in sperm motility factors, decreased semen quality, or effects on the egg. The same study found that exposure to insecticides and pesticides, cigarette chemicals, respiratory pollutants, and stress may also contribute to the onset of infertility.
As members of modern society, we all have some level of toxic load, and depending on what that level is, health hurdles, such as infertility, can arise.
When to Start Detoxing Before Trying to Conceive
Nicole Ritieni, N.P., Innovative Medicine’s Clinical Director, advises that “a good reference range for proper preconception detoxification can be anywhere from six months to one year. The amount of time that would be appropriate for a patient to detox before pregnancy varies depending on their toxic load, general state of health, and lifestyle.”
Detoxification is often considered an afterthought after receiving a diagnosis, but it should be a routine practice and a proactive protocol for maintaining optimal health. Although detoxing can be done at any time, prioritizing it before trying to conceive is one of many ways to support your body’s various functions, including reproduction.
Biological Score: A Starting Point for Detoxification
Your blood, connective tissue, muscles, bones, brain, and organs can store toxins. Determining your true toxic burden is an essential metric for evaluating your current state of health, the best detoxification methods, and whether treatments are successful or suppressive. Dr. Helmut Schimmel, M.D., designed a system called the Biological Score to determine the toxic load of a body. This system evaluates a patient’s response to a series of 21 ampules, thus a scale of 1–21, with 21 being the most toxic. For reference, a score of one to eight is considered healthy. The score will decrease as the body heals itself and the toxic load goes down with the support of innovative therapies and detoxification methods.

An Innovative Approach to Detoxing for Fertility
As explained by Ritieni, “At NYCIM, our care is centered around restoring the proper balance of all systems in the body. To achieve this, detoxification is essential. We use homeopathic oral and intravenous preparations and oxidative therapies to strengthen the function of specific organs and reestablish detox pathways. Following this, we focus on more specific issues within the body. This includes pathogens, dysfunctions, or other toxins, such as heavy metals, that may be interfering with reproductive function. Detoxification looks different from patient to patient. Therefore, we must address the root of each patient’s elevated toxicity and replenish any vital nutrients they may lack. When we remove the toxic burden from a patient’s body, we allow for the proper function of reproductive organs via improved mitochondrial health and proper hormonal balance.”
