NYCIM Erin Mewshaw, NP

Erin Mewshaw, NP

Clinical Director

Erin is a Family Nurse Practitioner and has been working for the New York Center for Innovative Medicine since 2014. Prior to joining the center, she worked in a community hospital where she learned the importance of connecting with each patient to support them on their journey to good health. Erin has always been passionate about holistic medicine and energy healing.

Healing is a lifelong journey, one that I’m proud to be a part of as we help guide patients to achieve their most optimal state of health.

What’s a favorite book you’d recommend to a patient or someone interested in learning about our approach to health and medicine?

“The Biology of Belief” by Dr. Bruce Lipton. This book will leave you feeling inspired and empowered to gain your health back!

What’s your best tip for improved sleep?

I have never been the best sleeper. I’m a very high-energy, yang individual! So, calming down to sleep at night can be challenging. I’ve learned that removing the TV from my room, going to bed at the same time every night, and turning off wifi are all helpful. Exercising and taking time to slow down during the day also seem to help me relax more at night. If my day is busy and hectic, I take time to practice the Buteyko breathing method for a few minutes. Being more mindful during the day allows me to rest my mind at night.

What’s your favorite TV show and why?

Too many favorites to mention…but what I have on frequently in the background is either Dream Home Makeover or Friends. Medicine can be heavy, especially when dealing with chronic illness. I like to keep things light, funny, or inspiring when off work!

Biography

Mark Iwanicki, ND, LAc

Naturopathic Doctor

Dr. Mark Iwanicki is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist in the state of NY. Having graduated from Cornell undergrad with a degree in pre-veterinary studies Dr. Mark was actually on track to become a Veterinarian. A personal health crisis forced Dr. Mark to change directions and seek the help of close family friends Dr. Thomas and Jolanta Szulc. After having his life completely transformed by their combined compassionate care and healing abilities Dr. Mark decided to change tracks and study natural approaches to health and wellness. Even though he was, and continues to be, a lifelong lover of animals Dr. Mark decided to forgo Veterinary school and co-found Innovative Medicine with Dr. Szulc and his son Caspar.

I am so excited to be a part of the team at NYCIM. Having experienced all aspects of the functional medicine world as both a doctor and a patient and seen the power of the treatments at the clinic first hand I can truly say there is no place like NYCIM on the planet. I feel privileged and honoured to be contributing to such a powerful force for change and healing in the natural medicine world.

The team worked hard at building one of the most innovative and exciting natural medicine content and marketing companies in the world but after 7 years Dr. Mark was getting the itch to return to school. He wanted to pursue a degree in clinical medicine but wasn’t sure what form that would take. At a trade show with Innovative Medicine Dr. Mark met with the president of NUNM (National University of Natural Medicine) in Portland Oregon and was sold on the idea of a career in Naturopathic Medicine. After an intensive 5 year, dual degree program in Naturopathic and Chinese Medicine Dr. Mark moved to San Francisco where he trained under Dr. Beth McDougall MD, at the Clear Center of Health one of the country’s leading functional and holistic bioidentical hormone practices.

Originally from Brooklyn, NY Dr. Mark knew that a return to the Big Apple was eventually in his cards. Being very close with his family Dr. Mark found constantly flying back and forth between the coasts a bit tiresome. When the opportunity to come on board with NYCIM in beautiful Huntington NY came along Dr. Mark jumped at the chance. By joining the team at NYCIM Dr. Mark hopes to meld his experience and knowledge working on the West Coast with the innovative and cutting edge medicine found only at NYCIM.

Get to Know Dr. Mark

Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled and why?

The coolest and most exciting place I’ve visited so far has been South East Asia, in particular Vietnam and Thailand. I took a 6 week trip there after my board exam from naturopathic med school and fell in love. The people are so warm, kind and friendly. The food and culture is so vibrant and exciting. The beaches, natural wonders and overall energy is incredible and unlike anything else anywhere in the world. Definitely my favorite area of the planet right now. Hopefully I will be able to go back and visit real soon!

What’s a favorite book you’d recommend to a patient or someone interested in learning about our approach to health and medicine?

I think one of the most important books on health and medicine is Power vs Force by Dr David Hawkins. It is the foundational text on energy and consciousness that forms the basis of the type of medicine practiced at NYCIM. It introduces the concept of a scale of consciousness which is extremely helpful in evaluating not only the quality and effectiveness of different treatment options but can be applied to literally every aspect of life.

What’s your best tip for improved sleep?

In addition to working on the fundamentals of proper sleep hygiene, something I love using for myself and patients that I have seen work tremendously well is Melatonin. Melatonin is the sleep hormone and in today’s hectic technologically screen driven world is something that many people are deficient in producing. The trick with Melatonin is that you need to start low and give it time. It doesn’t work overnight. It needs about 1-2 weeks to kick in when you take it orally. It is being studied for so many benefits including its role in lowering inflammation related to C-vid 19 and even certain cancers. I generally like to start with 3mg and take it from there. Make sure to always take it at night as it can make you drowsy. Also be aware that some people report feeling groggy in the morning if they take too high a dose the night before.

Biography

Jolanta Szulc, PhD.

Clinical Director of Psychological Services

Jolanta Szulc, PhD., is the Clinical Director of Psychological Services & Health Counseling at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine (NYCIM). She holds a Master of Science degree in Experimental Psychology from C.W. Post Long Island University, and a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology as well as a doctoral degree in Clinical/Health Psychology from Fielding Graduate University.

The warm, professional atmosphere and nonjudgmental, safe environment established at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine helps patients face their deeply hidden issues without fear of being blamed or criticized.

Before becoming a health psychologist at NYCIM she worked as a licensed Biofeedback, Neurofeedback and Qualitative EEG practitioner at Long Island Pain Treatment Center in Plainview, NY, and later at Manhattan Advanced Medicine in New York, NY. Throughout her professional career, she has attended many international conferences and seminars featuring unorthodox approaches to psychotherapy and energy medicine including training in ACMOS Energy Balancing, Bert Hellinger’s Family Constellations, Emotional Freedom Technique, and David Hawkins’ Transcending Levels of Consciousness.

Her approach to psychotherapy is holistic and eclectic in nature, depending on the particular need of the patient, and focuses on how mental, emotional, social, and spiritual factors affect a person’s physical well-being. The emphasis is always on the whole person—body, mind and spirit.

The correlation between stress, emotions, and physiological well-being has been well established, and at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine, the entire medical staff works alongside Dr. Jolanta Szulc to provide patients with the right solutions to all the emotional factors contributing to their illness. Offering advanced options such as neuro-behavioral and mindfulness training, cognitive therapy, stress management, heart rate variability training, and for some clients who require processing of old traumas and conflicts, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is being offered. However, one of the most important modalities utilized is a newly emerging Quantum Psychology based on a new generation biofeedback – LIFE biofeedback System, together with quantum counseling based on transcending levels of consciousness.

About L.I.F.E. System

The L.I.F.E. System is a new generation of biofeedback based an evoked potential. Information obtained via electrodes placed on the body provides clues to the wellness of an individual at an energy field (subtle plane level). A similar system is being used in space to provide astronauts with certain frequencies that they lose while in space. The computer reads an individual’s energy field and generates the list of items that the body perceives as potential emotional stressors. The computer evaluates and re-processes this information and then feedback is given back to the patient to offset the stressful reactions. This process merely assists the body’s own natural defense mechanisms by encouraging energetic balance and harmony. In this manner, each person is assessed and treated based on their unique needs.

The sophisticated system also allows the patient to become aware of the multitude of stressors and how to make a conscious decision in dealing with them in the most beneficial manner. This is done by recognizing that all thoughts and emotions have particular qualities and frequencies, and corresponding levels of consciousness that either helps us to heal and support our well-being or sabotage our health and well-being. As a result, we are able to provide treatment for a wide range of emotional issues which allows us to guide patients to make significant positive changes in their lives and regain their health: physically, emotionally, and spiritually by changing their way of being in the world and developing healthier habits and lifestyle. Of course, this can only be achieved with total willingness and cooperation of the patient. We are sensitive to the patient’s spirituality, and if they desire, we incorporate it into the therapeutic relationship.

The warm, professional atmosphere and nonjudgmental, safe environment established at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine helps patients face their deeply hidden issues without fear of being blamed or criticized. Only then can one start transforming their lives into healthier and more meaningful ones, and become the best version of themselves. To help patients with the process of change and further motivate them to stay on the task, we provide handouts and educational material that feature our holistic approach.

Caitlin Policastro, NP

Caitlin Policastro, BSN, MSN (ANP/GNP) attended the University of Pittsburgh for her undergraduate degree in nursing ten years ago. Shortly thereafter, while working in the ICU at Memorial Sloan Kettering Center, she enrolled at Hunter College for her Master’s degree in Adult/Geriatric Health in Nursing. While achieving her Master’s degree, she transferred to the Hospital for Special Surgery to work beside world-renowned orthopedic surgeons in the post-operative unit for four years. Upon completion of her Master’s program, she knew she had a strong calling for integrative medicine after witnessing so many of her patients experience chronic health issues with no reprieve from allopathic medicine.

Viewing patients on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level, as well as accepting each as a unique individual is what makes our practice truly special.

Caitlin has been with the New York Center for Innovative Medicine (NYCIM) for five years and is trained in ACMOS Energy Balancing, neural therapy, oxidative therapies, Bioresonance Analysis of Health (B.A.H.) evaluation, physical therapies, and many more. Over the past several years, she has worked and trained with renowned biological dentists, ND’s, osteopaths, and MD’s and continues to expand her knowledge to integrate the most effective and therapeutic techniques for the center.

The most memorable thing a patient ever told you?

Always do something in life that gives you peace, happiness and most importantly, purpose. If you do not, you will find yourself lost and eventually unhealthy and unhappy.

What is your favorite therapy at NYCIM?

ACMOS. It is one of the simplest, non-invasive therapies which works on balancing a patient’s energetic fields to reestablish proper energetic signaling within the body. When you have proper distribution of energy, (like lines of circuitry with proper electricity) every cell in the body resonates correctly with one another and proper physical function will follow suit. There is no guesswork involved and is not performed based on symptoms or patient complaints. Each patient is meticulously analyzed so that both patient and practitioner are certain that energy pathways have been properly restored.

What’s the coolest place you’ve traveled to?

The Galapagos Islands. I have never felt so at peace and immersed in nature. Everything felt untouched and in harmony; on top of seeing several different types of animals, plants, and sea life every day!

Biography

Nicole Ritieni, RN

Nicole attended Molloy College to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, she began her career training in the Medical ICU at North Shore University Hospital with critically ill patients. Following this position, Nicole worked at St. Francis Hospital specializing in cardiac care. These experiences reinforced her interest in integrative medicine, as many patients lacked treatments outside of the conventional medical model that could have greatly improved their outcomes. Nicole is currently obtaining her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner to further her career as a provider.

It has always been incredibly important for me to be part of a team which views each patient as the unique individual that they are. At NYCIM, this is the foundation of our care. Joining this team has given me the incredible opportunity to watch patients reclaim their health and their lives.

Prior to nursing, Nicole was eager to pursue her passion for health and wellness by becoming a registered dietitian, as she believed poor nutrition was a major contributor to disease. Though her path changed, she proceeded to enroll at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition obtaining her holistic nutrition and health coaching certification. She believes the daily habits we choose to live by can create a ripple effect of health and happiness, changing our lives for the better. This is not only dependent on the food we eat but what is going on in our minds. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, reading, traveling, exercising, meditation, and spending time with those close to her.

What’s a go-to healthy recipe of yours?

A go-to healthy recipe of mine is my morning green smoothie. I find it to be an easy way to pack in a ton of nutrients in an easily digestible way. Ingredients: 1 banana, 1/2 cup mango, 1/2 lemon, 2 cups spinach, 1 tbsp hemp seeds, 3 stalks celery, and 12 oz of filtered or coconut water. (All organic!)

What’s your morning routine look like?

I consider my morning routine essential. My favorite practices to start my day feeling centered and refreshed include: warm lemon water on an empty stomach to kick start my digestion, Kundalini meditation to center and calm my mind, and my skin care regimen. These simple practices allow me to start my day with clear energy. I may not have control over everything that will come my way in a given day, but I can control how I start it.

The most memorable thing a patient ever told me?

The most memorable thing a patient taught me was how much it means to make them feel seen and heard. To different degrees, they have lost control over an aspect of their health. This is an incredibly vulnerable position to be in. Though it will always be essential to be competent in providing clinical treatment and education, patients will always remember how you made them FEEL under your care. My goal is to always help patients feel seen and heard.

Ben Ahrens

Creative Content Director

Ben Ahrens grew up in New York City, received his early education at the Rudolf Steiner Waldorf School, and graduated from Pennsylvania’s Lafayette College with a B.A. degree in Philosophy. He then began his professional career working with athletes and post-rehab patients as a corrective exercise and performance enhancement specialist. His weekly newspaper column, “Fitness Matters” in the East Hampton Independent, and his directorship of East Hampton’s popular surfing camp, earned him a reputation as a strong advocate of health and fitness.

In 2009, Ben experienced his own health crisis when he was diagnosed with chronic neurological Lyme disease and found himself in a perilous battle to rid himself of the illness. He eventually found his way to Innovative Medicine, where he was treated with great success and eventually joined the team as Sales Director, and later Vice President. In recent years, he’s gone on to build a career helping progressive and visionary companies in the health and medical space develop brand experiences and narratives that break through the market clutter.

Since first coming to know about Innovative Medicine, now a decade ago, my understanding of the true causes of health and disease has radically expanded. I feel truly honored (and lucky) to have found my way here, and consider it a privilege to be a member of the team.

A soulful, insightful storyteller (see his TEDx talk), Ben powerfully distills complex ideas into compelling, succinct messages that connect with audiences on a personal level. He currently serves the IM team as Creative Content Director and enjoys surfing, hiking, reading and exploring in his free time.

What’s a favorite book you’d recommend to a patient or someone interested in learning about our approach to health and medicine?

“Healing & Recovery” by Dr. David R Hawkins, MD PhD – This book was a real eye opener to me when I was recovering from Lyme disease. It taught me that health & disease are not only about what happens to us (what infections, toxins, or trauma’s we’re exposed to) but also how and why our bodies respond the way they do. Understanding the hidden determinants of human behavior allows us to change our bodily responses.

What’s your best tip for improved sleep?

As someone who suffered with insomnia for most of my life, the best solution I found came not in the form of a pill, but rather, through the use of cognitive reappraisal and creating a more functional narrative around sleep (or lack thereof). Whereas I used to fear losing sleep (which would, of course, cause me to lose sleep), I now choose to view those times when I may be awake in the middle of the night, as “super-mega-bonus-time” – I see it as a gift of added time, as something to look forward to – as a special time to be with myself, experience peace and quiet, or catch up on a good book. Since I changed my attitude to view it this way, paradoxically, I rarely wake up anymore in the middle of the night.

How do you de-stress and keep calm?

I surf.

While working for two prestigious lecture bureaus in New York, Eddy was privileged to work alongside the likes of Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Daniel Goleman, and many other alternative thinkers who reshaped the way he thought about physical and mental health.

Having studied nutrition science, including biochemistry, genetics, and disease pathophysiology, it has become clear to me that our health depends far more on our emotional state than what we put into our mouths.

After joining Innovative Medicine in 2020, Eddy began pursuing his Master’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition from Sonoran University. He graduated in 2022 and is currently a CNS candidate pursuing his certification from the American Nutrition Association (ANA).

What does your morning routine look like?

The first thing I do upon waking is meditate, regardless of the time or what my day has in store. I typically don’t even use the restroom until I’ve meditated for 20 minutes.

How do you de-stress and keep calm?

Breathwork for immediate stress, walks outside in nature for intermediate stress, meditation for chronic, long-term stress.

What’s your best tip for improved sleep?

Go to bed when you’re tired. That “second wind” we experience after around 10 pm is an evolutionary adaptation to help us stay awake and stay sharp in the face of danger. There’s no danger. Turn off your TV and go to bed.

Bachelor’s Degree in Integrative Health Science. Enjoy quality time with family and friends, spending time outdoors, long boarding by the beachside, and making others around me laugh and feel good inside

How do you keep calm and de-stress?

Make sure to get plenty of sleep each night, surround yourself with good people who bring out the best in you, practice breathing exercises, unplug from electronics, meditate, focus on the positives, create a gratitude journal, and spend time in the sun!

What’s the best piece of health advice anyone gave you?
It is crucial to remember that our mental health is just as important as our physical health, as it helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make the good choices necessary for a healthy life. Poor mental health can induce stress and have an effect on our immune systems, and as a result, our bodies ability to cope with illness may be jeopardized.

What’s your morning routine look like?
My morning routine is pertinent to starting my day off on the right foot, and it’s the easiest way to feel a sense of accomplishment early in the day. I always start off by making my bed and making sure my room is a clean, cozy space to come back to later on. Then I brush my teeth and do my skincare routine (refreshing!) before taking my daily vitamins and supplements, and go on to tackle the day.
