A Natural Way to Heal Cavities?
Wait, Teeth Are Organs?
When it comes to oral health, there’s a hard truth to swallow: if you or your child has cavities, then they aren’t healthy. Your teeth are organs exactly like your liver, stomach, and intestine are organs. Each has its own blood supply, its own nerve function, and a cranial nerve with an autonomous nervous system. Anatomically, your teeth are also the organs closest to the brain.
Like all organs, we cannot separate our teeth from the rest of the body and must understand that everything we consume not only touches our teeth but also provides them with their building blocks; think calcium and iodine, for example.
That’s why a diet rich in sugar and white flour is so detrimental as it is linked both to dental caries and to malpositions of the teeth and jaws.
The Root Cause of Cavities
Our oral health is just a reflection of our overall bodily health and the presence of cavities indicates deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals as well as an excess of sugars and acid-forming foods. In short, too many grains, phytic acid, sugar, and insulin spikes soften and eventually kill our teeth.
To take this a step further, an individual consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein can be deficient too. Common gut problems such as leaky gut, celiac disease, and gluten intolerance can all result in malabsorption. This cannot be overstated as leaky gut is estimated to affect as much as 80% of the population.
A Natural Way to Heal Cavities?
In our conversation with author and biological dentist Dr. Dominik Nischwitz, he stressed the importance of diet and proper supplementation for optimal oral health. As Dr. Domink likes to put it, we need to teach our children how to eat to be “superheroes.” And what do superheroes eat? Real food, with plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables and efficient proteins such as meat and fish.
Under the motto, “the mouth as a mirror for health,” Dr. Dominik belongs to a school of biological dentists that look more closely at the basic principles of chemistry, physics and biochemistry and establishes a firm link between chronic systemic diseases and disorders of the oral cavity.
So if you have a cavity, research in the last few years is pretty clear. It is correlated with a vitamin D3 deficiency – on one side – cavities in little kids. And I don’t know why everybody takes more vitamin D3, but somewhat we miss our kids. That is just the research.”
