Case Review: Alpha-Gal Syndrome

History & Diagnosis

A 16-year-old female presented to our medical center who suffered from Lyme Disease and associated Alpha-Gal Syndrome, which is referred to as tick bite meat allergy. In these cases, a person produces an allergic reaction to a carbohydrate called alpha-gal, which is found in all non-primate mammals. During her initial visit, she reported severe dermatologic and gastrointestinal reactions to ingestion or general exposure to the scent of animal protein. Due to this, she could not consume animal-based products or participate in eating at restaurants or functions where meat was being served.

Aside from dietary restrictions, she was also unable to be around any animals without beginning to experience a similar reaction. Her family has a farm, so this caused many restrictions on her life and her work. She suffered from depression, anxiety, insomnia, night sweats, and generalized muscle and joint pains. This patient had no prior diagnosis of Lyme Disease despite her efforts but was confident that she was misdiagnosed based on her symptoms. Due to a lack of diagnosis, she was left without any form of treatment for over a year.

What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is a condition impacting a growing number of people in which one develops an allergic reaction to meat. To be more precise, a person develops an allergy to the carbohydrate galactose-α-1,3-galactose (shortened as alpha-gal) found in all mammals except humans and some primates. A tick bite may trigger the syndrome. The lone star tick is the most common cause of alpha-gal syndrome in the US.

Evaluation

A comprehensive analysis of the patient revealed the following:

  • Very high tissue toxicity – 16 on Dr. Schimmel’s scale.
    • Dr. Schimmel’s scale, referred to as the Biological Score or Index, involves a toxicity score ranging from 0-21. As a reference, a normal range for a healthy individual is considered 1-8.
  • High heavy metal toxicity disrupting the autonomic nervous system.
  • Disturbance in the proper functioning of the immune system causing severe allergies.
  • Multiple nutritional deficiencies including minerals (Copper, Magnesium, Molybdenum, Selenium, Zinc) and significant vitamin deficiencies (B, C, and D).
  • Multiple pathogens associated with spirochetes infection, including viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic co-infections.
  • There were major emotional issues causing stress to the system and imbalance of the energy fields. The patient’s HRV assessment revealed overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system and neuro-hormonal imbalance, further supporting her reports of anxiety and depression.

Treatment

A personalized program of treatment was established to reduce the toxic burden, address infections, and restore proper terrain.

She started her treatment with cleansing of her body and restoration of the proper function of the organs/overall system using both oral and intravenous methods.

She took daily ionized minerals, nutritional supplements, and homeopathic preparations at home to open her drainage pathways and initiate detoxification. She also started rebuilding her milieu with Sanum preparations and detoxifying heavy metals with oral chelating agents.

Intravenous infusions were combined with oxidative therapies, neural therapy, and intramuscular antiviral injections using natural compounds. These treatments were administered four times a week for two weeks. During her first week of intravenous therapy, energy balancing was performed using the French ACMOS method, an advanced therapeutic system similar to acupuncture but without needles. At this time, she also initiated advanced emotional therapies, where she reported feeling significant breakthroughs from past trauma. Following this came four sessions of antimicrobial therapies administered twice a week, separated by intravenous infusions to support her ability to eliminate pathogens and detoxify. After the main course of her 4-week treatment, the patient experienced the elimination of many of her initial symptoms. Most notably, she could eat beef without any adverse reactions for the first time in over a year. She also experienced significant improvement in her depression, anxiety, and generalized joint pain.

Alpha Gal Syndrome is a life-changing allergic reaction that extends well beyond dietary restrictions. The reward of being part of this patient’s treatment was not just in witnessing the resolution of her allergy, but also watching her reclaim her social life and activities that gave her fulfillment.”

Results

The patient completed all intravenous and oral treatments as per her personalized program of treatment. After four weeks, she felt much better, and many of her initial symptoms were eliminated. She was very happy, feeling much better overall, and relieved that she could participate in what felt like normal activities of daily living. She felt she was finally seen and heard and that her condition was taken seriously. After the last treatment, her results showed that all pathogenic organisms were eliminated, her toxicity came down to a 10, regulation of her autonomic nervous system was restored, and she successfully eliminated most heavy metals. She was free from Lyme disease, as well as Alpha-Gal syndrome.

Before traveling back home, the patient expressed relief that she could enjoy something as simple as eating with others.

Due to her allergies before treatment, enjoying food with friends and family was often accompanied by fear and frustration as she experienced an advanced allergic response to foods that were commonly served.

Additionally, she can now help with her family farm and spend time with her animals, which has always been important to her. Before leaving our medical center, the patient was reminded that although she is mostly feeling better, complete healing is a process that requires time. Proper lifestyle habits paired with supportive supplements would be necessary to continue her healing process as she returns home. She expressed immense gratitude to the team at NYCIM for coaching her in the restoring of her health.
