How Fear & Stagnation Can Make You Sick
What TCM says about stagnation
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TC), stagnation is one of the most common causes of disease. How does this manifest in the body? While stagnation can take many forms, digestive problems, tense shoulders, mood swings, and hormonal imbalances are some of the more typical symptoms. In order to be healthy, the body and the mind must have a smooth flow of energy (qi) that allows all forms of toxicity to clear out.
How to avoid stagnation
In his second appearance on the Rachel Varga podcast, Caspar and Rachel explore how negative emotions like fear and stagnation can make us sick. While things like exercise and sweating, breathwork, meditation, and journaling are all effective ways to release stagnation, sometimes mindset is the most valuable tool in our toolkit.
According to Caspar, critical thinking is essential for growth and growth is essential for healing. Therefore, a stagnant body and a stagnant mindset is one that will very likely set us on the road for illness and disease.
What does the science say?
When looking at things like heart rate variability, we measure a healthy heart rate by one that responds (adapts) to factors like exercise, respiration, stress, and sleep. As the saying goes, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” Although we can debate the origin, we cannot debate the truth of this concept.
When we get stuck in our television fears and play into the fear paradigm, we set ourselves up for a life of fear and potential dis-ease. But by maintaining a childlike curiosity and openness, we can continuously learn, grow, adapt, and tune into our intuition and set ourselves up to live in a state that is truly optimal for health and healing.
Having that childlike questioning mindset that’s where growth happens. That’s where innovation happens. That’s where we don’t stay stagnant. And I just want everybody to know that in my opinion, we’re going through highly evolutionary times.”
