Why We Need to Redefine “Anti-aging”

When we think of the term “anti-aging,” it’s difficult not to conjure images of expensive skin creams, botox injections, and surgeries that work to restore our youthful appearance, but completely neglect the health of the body. We all want to look our best and even shave a few years off our appearance, but is there any benefit to reducing wrinkles or evening skin tone if the health of the body is being neglected?

Innovative Medicine’s Caspar Szulc sat down with Rachel Varga to discuss the evolving practice of anti-aging and why the term itself is something of a misnomer that should be redefined. With so much attention on this burgeoning field, it’s easy to forget that anti-aging itself is an area of medicine that goes deeper than skin and begins on the inside.

Caspar explains why true anti-aging should be labeled as “holistic aging,” as it is natural aging not accelerated by high stress, excessive toxins, unnatural light exposure, hormone imbalances, and poor hydration. Even if beauty and cosmetics are the goal, the methods of anti-aging should still be as close to nature as possible, with an emphasis on lasers and regenerative practices such as hydrating, detoxing, exercising, and living in an environment that mimics nature as much as possible.

“It’s not that aging is a bad thing…when people feel good, they want to look good too. So I just like to be very clear that aging can be a beautiful journey.”
