The Problem with Amalgams

The safe removal of dental amalgams is a hot topic in biological dentistry, both for the toxic substances involved, such as cadmium, silver, copper, and mercury, as well as the pervasive nature of mercury to spread into the air and throughout the bloodstream.

One of the world’s strongest neurotoxins, mercury poisoning can result in some subtle to severe symptoms including tremors, convulsions, seizures, depression, irritability, moodiness, loss of memory, trouble focusing, kidney disease, birth defects, and infertility and miscarriages, to name a few.

In summary, you don’t want to mess around with mercury fillings.

So you read up on all the reasons Why You Should Never Get a Root Canal and understand the dangers associated with root canals, dental amalgams, and understand why you don’t want them lingering in your mouth.

The Biological Dentist’s Approach

But as we are frequently asked, what do I do if I have a mouth full of fillings? According to biological dentist Dr. Dominik Nischwitz, the first thing to do is not panic and avoid removing them all at once, especially by a conventional dentist.

In our conversation with Dr. Nischwitz, he lays out some simple but important rules for managing mercury amalgams and explains why only a specialized biological dentist should be trusted to remove them safely.

The Amalgam Removal Procedure

As Dr. Dominik describes, there is a strict protocol in place to safely remove dental amalgams. With a goal to limit the amount of mercury ingested or inhaled, a rubber dam is used in the patient’s mouth, followed by a
a suction device placed over the tooth to extract the mercury vapor, as well as a nasal probe to prevent the inhalation of mercury vapor.

Biological dentists also use a powerful air filtration system to remove up to 99% of the vapor that is released into the air while wearing their own medical-grade masks and gloves that are specialized against mercury.

In some cases, patients are administered certain IV nutrients before or after their amalgam removal to prevent the absorption of mercury. It is recommended that dentists remove amalgams in as few sessions as possible as this stops the immune system from developing allergies to the chemicals, amalgams, and vapors.

Due to the extreme toxicity and potency of mercury, pregnant and lactating women are advised against the procedure unless it is an absolute emergency. Interested in removing your amalgams? As biological dentists are less common in the US than in Europe, you can begin your search with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.

“You need to find a skilled dentist who is able to remove all the metals, not just the mercury fillings, but all the metals under special precautions and safe removal strategies.”
