Introduction to Spagyric Medicine

Spagyric medicine is a European biological medical modality that incorporates homeopathy, herbology, and pharmacology based on the observations and research of one of the most famed physicians of all time, Paracelsus. The word spagyric stems from the Greek words spien and agera, which means to separate and unite. As a result of continuous rhythmic separation, and again conjoining, an enhancement in quality results. The term spagyric, therefore, expresses the universal method of positive enhancement.

Some of the main concepts associated with spagyric medicine are those of systemic healing, self-healing, and treating the whole organism by means of complete medicine.

Modern medicine has become a science of great complexity. Recent statistics confirm that we face a growing problem and that current approaches to these complex medical issues have been unsuccessful, aiming for the management of symptoms rather than comprehensive healing and restoration. Spagyric medicine takes a different approach – by correcting the underlying cause of dysfunction and retraining the body to heal itself, enduring health results prevail and symptoms naturally subside.

Spagyric medicines combine multiple vital ingredients (including plants, herbs, minerals, and metals), all enhanced and evolved to their highest potential through an intricate production process. Dynamized and homeopathically attenuated ingredients are combined with purified, concentrated, and bioavailable medicinal plants and herbs to form a dynamic medicine where all ingredients work synergistically to become much more than the sum of their parts. The end result is a biological medicine unlike any other.

Benefits of Spagyric Medicine

Clinical experience has shown that spagyric medicine may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:

  • Improves detoxification and drainage mechanisms of the body on a cellular and organ-based level, and detoxifies the body from endogenous and exogenous toxins
  • Regulates and restores proper functioning of systems and organs of the body
  • Takes a systemic approach of healing via addressing root cause dysfunctions instead of managing symptoms
  • Simultaneously impacts the biochemical, psycho-emotional (PNEI system) and informational levels of the body to initiate self-healing
  • Non-toxic, natural and made from medicinal plants, herbs, metals and minerals
  • Provides information and energy for systems to regulate back to a homeostatic state
  • Offers a conjunctive therapy to minimize all toxic effects and help provide natural relief to side-effects caused by conventional treatment

How Spagyric Medicine Works

Most medication on the market today aims to alleviate and manage symptoms. Not spagyric medicine. Through an advanced production method and the use of numerous, high-quality natural ingredients, spagyric medicine offers practitioners an effective oral therapy that addresses root-cause dysfunctions and regulates the body for optimal functioning and restores the patient to their natural, healthy state.

Homeopathy
Spagyric medicines contain homeopathic attenuations obtained through a distillation process. The therapeutic ingredients are left with energetic vibrational signals that are dynamized and concentrated. Unlike homeopathic remedies that are left with only signatures of the original material used, spagyric medicines recombine purified states of original physical ingredients with the distilled homeopathic attenuations so the final product has an effect on the biochemical (physical) level, PNEI regulatory (energetic) level, as well as the informational (quantum state – also energetic) level.

Spagyric medicine combines the benefits of homeopathic mother tinctures with those of high homeopathic attenuations.

Herbology
In addition to homeopathically attenuated ingredients, spagyric medicines recombine these ingredients with their physical counterparts. Unlike herbology though, these ingredients are specially processed and purified to eliminate the toxic side-effects common with herbs and plant products. Multiple plants are used that synergistically work together, and these botanical extracts demonstrate a great variety of individual constituents.

Spagyric medicine keeps active physical constituents of medicinal plants and herbs, but purify them and make them more concentrated and bioavailable.

Pharmacology
Throughout the formulation and production of each Spagyric medication, pharmacological stipulations and understanding of the effect that certain plants, minerals, and metals have on the regulation mechanisms of specific organ systems are taken into consideration. Whereas modern pharmacology only concentrates on the physical level and symptomatic results of dysfunction, spagyric medicine addresses the body on all levels (biochemical, PNEI regulatory, and informational) and addresses symptomatic causes through the restoration of proper functioning and self-regulation.

Spagyric medicine alleviates symptoms without suppressing them, but rather by providing the proper resources for the body to manage itself and restore health on all levels.

Behind the Science

Science & Safety

Cell salts are a popular and safe wellness system worldwide. They are made with the highest quality raw materials, prepared homeopathically, and absorbed by your mucous membranes – not your digestive system, which makes them gentle yet effective and their benefits quickly available to the body.

Diseases are a result of a breakdown in the molecular structure and movement of the tissue salts. Restoring and stabilizing the body’s tissue salts can resolve the disruption in the molecular structure. Administering the same deficient mineral salt in small doses can correct the body’s imbalance.

Introduction to Schüessler Cell Salts

Schüessler Cell Salts (also known as Schüessler Tissue Salts) are a form of oligotherapy and act on the cellular level to balance and restore cell function.

Modern lifestyles drain even the most health-conscious of us, and if you consider that you lose minerals through stress, worry, insufficient nutrition, electro-pollution, exposure to heavy metals, etc. it really is a wonder there’s anything left.

Discovered by Dr. Wilhelm Heinrich Schüessler (1821-1898), a German physician, he based his therapy on a total of 12 mineral salts, which he called “functional substances”, because they perform essential functions in our body and are suitable for remedying a multitude of functional disorders. Dr. Schussler had theorized that these mineral salts were vital for the regular functioning of the body’s cells, and concluded further that deficiencies in any of these tissue salts would lead to dysfunction and illness. Consequently, the treatment of mineral imbalances in the body by tissue salts must be an essential factor for restoring health.

Schuessler believed illness was often related to a lack of one or more of these salts, and he thought that the administration of the salts to the deficient organism would lead to healing. Schuessler Salts are able to harmonize and regulate chemical processes within the cells, and are beneficial to the digestive system, pancreas, kidneys and establish water-electrolyte balance within the body. Cell salts also nourish the blood, muscles, skin, hair, and nails.

Benefits of Schüessler Cell Salts

Clinical experience has shown that Schüessler cell salts may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:

  • Compensates for the mineral lack in the cell
  • Encourages cells to assimilate minerals from other sources
  • Strengthens the tooth enamel and is helpful for sensitive teeth, both chronically and acutely (e.g. Calcanea fluorica)
  • Supports growth and development in growing children as well as regulates calcium metabolism (e.g. Calcanea phosphorica)
  • Increases oxygenation and is a suitable remedy for athletes and marathon runners (e.g. Ferrum phosphoricum)

How Schüessler Cell Salts Works

Mineral salts are often present within our food supply, yet they often do not end up where the patient’s body most needs them – within the cells. A deficiency or an imbalance of the vital minerals can lead to cell or even organ dysfunction, and end in illness.

Every cell in the human body consists of water, organic materials such as sugars and fats, and inorganic matter (minerals). Even though water and organic matter make up the greater proportion, the inorganic matter is vitally important in a number of biochemical functions within the body. As a matter of fact, the creation of new cells depends on the presence of minerals.

Schüessler cell salts construe a biochemical therapy that is capable of supporting the human body functions with mineral salts which are indispensable for the metabolic processes within the cells. The salts help to reorganize or cure an imbalance of the respective minerals in the cells. Because many ingested mineral salts are unable to reach the cells (either due to already established dysfunctions or other factors), Dr. Schüssler created a diluted version of the mineral salts, similar to homeopathy. These diluted versions of mineral salts are able to find their way into single cells via digestive processes and circulation in the blood, where they could be readily assimilated by the cells. After the assimilation of these cell salts, imbalances inside the cell can begin to be rectified. The process also triggers the cell to absorb larger mineral salts directly from the blood in order to fulfill the needs to function and regenerate properly. Because these diluted mineral salts work within the cells, they were given the name “cell salts” or “tissue salts”.

Schuessler identified 12 homeopathic medicines as biochemical remedies. These twelve basic salts are:

Calcarea fluorica (Calcium fluoride): Recommended for the development of healthy bones and teeth in children. It also supports the nervous system and combats fatigue, particularly in the morning.

Calcium phosphorica (Calcium phosphate): Supports the absorption of nutrients from food and fights vitamin D deficiency and assists with the recovery from injuries and overuse of bones and muscles and deals with neuralgic pains.

Calcium sulfate: Speeds the healing of skin conditions — including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and dandruff. It also helps recover from colds, coughs, and sinusitis. On the emotional level, Calc Sulph supports people who are moody and often complaining.

Ferrum phosphorica (Iron phosphate): Aids in inflammatory conditions, including colds, coughs, fevers, injuries to muscles and joints, and wounds.

Kali muriaticum (Potassium chloride): Beneficial wherever there is a white-coated tongue, white discharge from a cold, cough, or sinus infection, and also white blisters and burns. Can be used externally as a first-aid remedy after a burn. It supports a healthy brain and helps people who toss and turn in their sleep.

Kali phosphorica (Potassium phosphate): Alleviates anxiety, mental exhaustion, insomnia, and depression and helps people who are shy and do not want to mix and talk with others.

Kali sulphurica (Potassium sulfate): Helps clear up severe mucus and skin inflammations including yellow discharge from coughs, colds, and boils. Great for fungal and yeast infections and healthy nails and hair.

Magnesia Phosphorica (Magnesium phosphate): For pain, especially nerve-related pain, shooting pain, and muscle spasms. It is recommended for cramps including menstrual pains and leg cramps, toothaches, and babies’ pain from teething.

Natrum muriaticum (Sodium chloride): Helps regulate water levels within the cells, as well as relieve hay fever, sore throat, dry eyes, dry cuticles, dandruff, constipation, and migraines. On the emotional level, it helps deal with grief, high sensitivity, weak memory, and all forms of exhaustion from intellectual overwork.

Natrum sulphuricum (Sodium sulphate): Responsible for eliminating waste water from the cells. It stimulates the action of the liver, pancreas, and intestines and is recommended as a liver cleanse and for diabetes sufferers. It helps deal with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, the flu, and also edema and gout.

Natrum phosphoricum (Sodium phosphate): An acid neutralizer and helps establish a proper pH balance in the body. Nat Phos alleviates heartburn, gas, indigestion, also baby colic, and acidity in the joints which can result in rheumatism, arthritis, and gout.

Silica: Recommended for healthier skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue. It helps eliminate foreign matters such as a splinter, breaks up abscesses, strengthens hair, and helps firm and tone muscles.

They are generally available in two forms: as minute amounts of the salt in a lactose-base soluble tablet, and as minute amounts of salt in an alcohol base, for those who are severely lactose-intolerant. The tablets, one or two at a time (or more), are usually placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve. Alternatively, the tablets can be crushed and dissolved in a little water.

Introduction to Oligotherapy

Oligotherapy uses oligo-elements that are bioavailable forms of trace minerals that are rapidly absorbed sublingually for therapeutic support, supplementing the necessary minerals for enzymatic functions. These bio-available elements work by normalizing enzyme and hormonal functions in order to regulate the homeostasis of the body.

Oligos in Greek means “a very tiny quantity”. Oligo-elements, or trace elements, are very minute doses of minerals. Most minerals come from metals, except for calcium, fluoride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and sulfur which are metalloids (non-metallic).

Oligotherapy is a method of providing the body with the ions it cannot synthesize and which are indispensable for cellular enzymatic functions. This functional therapeutic modality requires the use of trace elements in precisely measured, small doses in a highly bioavailable form. These trace elements are co-factors in a multitude of biochemical reactions where they accelerate the speed of these reactions without ever modifying the important equilibrium that exists and that must reign within the body to maintain optimum health.

Gabriel Bertrand, a French chemist, and biologist, first identified these enzymatic cofactors approximately 100 years ago and named them “oligo” elements. Later, French physician Dr. Jacques Menetrier demonstrated that oligo-elements could be used in the treatment of biochemical dysfunctions. Oligotherapy is widely recognized throughout Europe as a powerful modality for treating a multitude of diseases, some of which include bacterial infections, cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, circulatory disorders, and neurological conditions.

Benefits of Oligotherapy Mineral Supplementation

Clinical experience has shown that oligotherapy may be used to improve wellbeing and that the benefits include:

  • Serve as biological catalysts that activate metabolism and enzymatic function at the cellular level
  • Provides essential nutrition to stop the free radical activity which destroys bodily tissue
  • Enhances the movement of ions into and out of the cells
  • Removes heavy metals and reduces toxicity in connective tissue
  • Normalizes enzyme and hormonal functions in order to regulate homeostasis of the body
  • Supports coagulation of the blood, rhythmic functions of the heart and intestines, e.g. calcium
  • Regulates the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, e.g. cobalt
  • Controls membrane permeability, muscular contraction, nerve impulse condition and regulation of protein synthesis, e.g. magnesium

How Oligotherapy Works

Almost all biological reactions require enzymes (biological catalysts) in order to occur at the rates the body needs for health and survival. Many enzymes depend on specific mineral cofactors for proper functioning. These minerals need to be present in extremely low concentrations, but they are absolutely vital to bio-regulation. These bioavailable forms of trace minerals are rapidly absorbed and work by normalizing enzyme and hormonal functions in order to regulate homeostasis in the body.

Supplying these needed mineral cofactors at precise concentration unblocks diseased metabolic pathways, thus allowing the body’s healing mechanism to operate. Oligo-elements may also prepare the patient to respond more readily and successfully to other modalities.

Oligotherapy is a simple, non invasive way to provide the patient with vital trace elements that are necessary for cellular function.”

Caitlin Policastro, NP

The ionized trace elements used within oligotherapy include bismuth, cobalt, fluoride, copper chromium, iodine, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sulfur, and zinc (as well as various combinations). These supplements are low concentrations of specially prepared elements that are vital to the regulation of various enzymatic functions. These “oligo-elements” (trace minerals) when administered work at the cellular level to supply needed mineral co-factors at precise concentrations to unblock diseased metabolic pathways, thus allowing the body’s healing mechanisms to operate.

Keeping the correct balance of trace elements throughout an organism is essential for enzymatic function, and a deficiency in any element may lead to a functional disorder. Oligo-elements can be found in food, but also in pills and powdered drinkable solutions. It is recommended to take them 15 minutes before eating and to ensure that a 15-20 minute break is taken between doses.

Behind the Science

Science & Safety

Trace elements such as iron, iodine, fluoride, copper, zinc, chromium, selenium, manganese and molybdenum are vital for maintaining health and often prescribed in the specialized form allowed through oligotherapy to patients in various states of disease. This is most true in integrative medical centers found in Europe, where a biological approach is found most effective and with fewest side-effects.

Manganese, another micromineral, is necessary for the formation of enzymes. It also works as an antioxidant. Women with osteoporosis have been found to have decreased plasma or serum levels of manganese and also an enhanced plasma response to an oral dose of manganese (19, 20), suggesting they may have lower manganese status than women without osteoporosis.

Introduction to Isopathy (Pleomorphism)

Isopathy (also known as Pleomorphism or Sanum remedies) are a form of oral therapy that rests on the belief in the fundamental mutability of form in microorganisms and that microorganisms can abruptly change from an avirulent benign form into a potentially virulent, pathogenic form. Pleomorphism proposes that an endobiont (symbiotic, primal plant germ in the erythrocyte, as named by Professor Dr. Gunther Enderlein) lives in genuine symbiosis with the host organism (the patient) with mutual benefits. Only through outer factors can the endobiont multiply and develop in a process which can considerably disturb the symbiotic equilibrium and cause dysfunction in the body.

More simply, Pleomorphism is based on the theory that every warm-blooded organism houses a primal plant germ, which can change in form through environmental influences. In the interest of a comparison, allopathic medicine (western medicine) rests on monomorphism which assigns only a single form and function to microorganisms and does not recognize cyclic developmental changes.

A lesser-known discipline formulated by Johann Joseph Wilhelm Lux in the 1830s, Isopathy is essentially a more specific subversion of homeopathy. Rather than “like cures like”, isopathy uses “exactly the same thing cures the thing.” Isopathic remedies are made from the actual cause of the illness or from its byproducts and are not directed against the disease or its symptoms, but instead support the body’s own capabilities for regeneration, whereby genuine healing processes become possible.

Gunther Enderlein (1872-1968) is often called the founder of Isopathic Medicine, though the work of Johan Joseph Wilhelm Lux and Antoine Bechamp does proceed it. Enderlein was a German zoologist and entomologist and built his research on Antoine Bechamp’s discoveries that unfavorable host and environmental conditions destabilize the host’s native microzymas. Enderlein proved that blood is not sterile, and that a microorganism can appear in various developmental stages and in diverse forms, without the loss of its specific characteristics. He came to the conclusion that the monomorphic perspective of disease conditions favored by Louis Pasteur and others could no longer be maintained and that a pleomorphic perspective more accurately reflected the disease process.

Benefits of Isopathy

Clinical experience has shown that isopathy may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:

  • Assist in regulating internal ecology (pH and cell respiration)
  • Regulates dysfunctions of the lymphatic system
  • Supports the GI system and its beneficial microflora
  • Supports the elimination of metabolic and decomposition product
  • Reduces the effects of biochemical stress
  • Improves immune function and microcirculation

How Pleomorphic Remedies Work

Isopathy is a concept based on the presence of microorganisms in our body that can change form depending on the internal environment of our body. Isopathic/pleomorphic therapy nonviolently normalizes the symbiotic equilibrium between endobiont and its organism on the basis of the species-identical organisms. Isopathic remedies help in harmonizing and treating imbalances in the body and are useful in treating various medical conditions and providing new potential treatments for different illnesses. Diseases indicate healing processes, which attempt to return a disturbed symbiosis to the original healthy condition. Whether the biological self-healing forces of the organism will win over the disease, or whether the symbiont is able to develop unchecked into a parasite, depends on the condition of the milieu in which the disturbance plays out.

If the inner milieu is damaged through unhealthy nutrition and lifestyles, with their resultant disturbance of the acid-base equilibrium, through environmental toxins, through constant infections, or through psychological depressions, our self-healing forces are incapable of restoring our symbiotic equilibrium. Therefore, the disease will manifest and damage the body. Isopathy does not work against the symptoms of a disease or the disease itself. In fact, it tries to regenerate the internal milieu by supporting the body’s capabilities. This is how it is possible to have actual healing processes.

Le microbe n’est rien, le terrain est tout.
The microbe is nothing, the terrain is everything.”

Last words of Louis Pasteur, father of the “Germ Theory” of disease

In 1916, Enderlein discovered that primitive microorganic forms prepared in a remedy, when combined with a change in the biological terrain of the body, can cause virulent forms to return to their original avirulent condition bringing healing to the host body. He found that when the tiniest, mobile living forms of bacteria, which he called “spermits” exchanged genetic material with higher developmental organisms, the highly developed organisms became suddenly invisible, having been broken down to their primitive avirulent forms.

Using this knowledge, he developed isopathic remedies from fungal cultures. When these living remedies contact virulent microbial masses, the masses are induced to return to their avirulent form, and then leave the body through the natural organs of elimination.

A key concept within pleomorphism is the biological terrain, or inner milieu, as described by Enderlein and Bechamp. A healthy patient with a well balanced inner environment (biological terrain) is capable of restoring equilibrium and maintaining a symbiotic relationship with endobionts. In this process, the more highly developed pathogenic germs are broken down into avirulent primitive forms through the copulation described by Enderlein. However, the capacity for regenerating symbiosis is usually massively weakened through unhealthy lifestyles that are not in harmony with nature. If the internal environment or milieu is cleaned up by changing diet, balancing pH, and modifying stress, the favorable forms of microorganisms are introduced to the ones that already exist, to restore the original biological terrain and microorganism base.

Behind the Science

Science & Safety

Because Enderlein wrote all his publications (more than 500) in German, his important work has until now been almost completely unknown outside German-speaking countries. However, Enderlein’s research was recently summarized in English by Dr. Maria-M. Bleker (Blood Examination in Darkfield, Semmelweis-Verlag, Hoya, Germany, 1993, ISBN 3-925524-01-0). It is to be hoped that the results of Enderlein’s research will now get the attention they deserve.

Pleomorphic remedies are able to regulate all nonspecific, general symptoms that pertain to the Endobiosis complex, based on the knowledge of the mutability of microbial forms and the fact of the biological, and essential for life symbiosis between the mammal organism and the Endobiont. The immunobiological preparations contain diverse fractions of various bacterial species, such as intact cells, cellular extracts, and cell wall fragments of polysaccharides. Isopathic remedies are capable of stepping into the course of a physical immune reaction and raising the immune system’s capacity for response through their nonspecific stimulation. This takes influencing diverse subpopulations of lymphoid and phagocytizing cells which take part in the immune functions.

Introduction to Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a natural medical science that is both gentle and effective. This unique therapeutic system takes on a holistic approach as it aims to treat the whole individual. Disorders, diseases, and illnesses are expressed through a variety of symptoms that may be emotional, mental, and/or physical in nature. These symptoms are seen as an attempt for the body to restore balance and health.

The system was created by German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s, and is based on the law of “Similia Similibus Curentur” (let likes be cured by likes). This guiding philosophy behind homeopathy is based on the Law Of Similars that states by matching the symptoms that are caused in healthy people by a certain substance, that same substance has the best chance of producing a curing response with diseased individuals that express those same symptoms.

Conventional medicine is quite powerful and certainly has its place on the medical spectrum. However, suppressive pharmaceutical drugs tend to treat only the symptoms of a disease without addressing the root causes. For instance, antibiotics, while very effective in many cases, have been overused with the sacrifice of damaging an individual’s auto-immune system. In other words, if a patient is dependent on pharmaceutical drug therapies to find relief, this instead may make them more vulnerable to disease than a healthy individual’s own defense mechanisms would typically fight off.

A more natural approach, like homeopathy, is a holistic restoration process that combines spiritual and physical states of the body. Homeopathic remedies are prepared from natural substances to precise standards and work by stimulating the body’s own healing ability. They are extremely safe due to their small doses, totally natural, and extremely effective when taken correctly.

Homeopathy is very popular in Europe, especially France, England, Scotland, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, and Greece. Approximately 40% of French people use homeopathic medicine, and in Switzerland, homeopathic medicines are strongly supported by the government. In 2011, the Swiss government reported that homeopathic treatment is effective and inexpensive and that it should be compensated by Switzerland’s national health insurance program.

Benefits of Homeopathy

Clinical experience has shown that homeopathy may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:

  • Instead of using strong and powerful doses of medicinal agents that have a broad-spectrum effect on a wide variety of people with a similar disease, homeopaths use extremely small doses of medicinal substances that are highly individualized to a person’s physical and psychological syndrome of disease, not simply an assumed localized pathology
  • Does not interfere with other medications
  • Aims to optimize the body and fight all manifestations of the disease
  • Improves the level of health by stimulating the self-regulatory mechanism
  • Covers a wide range of dysfunctions
  • Helps to eliminate all traces of the disease and cures it of the core
  • Treats the person instead of the disease
  • A holistic treatment, addressing the body, mind, and spirit

How Homeopathy Works

Very simply, homeopathy attempts to stimulate the body to recover itself. To get a better understanding of exactly how homeopathy works, we have to take into consideration some standard holistic principles.

First, we must accept that all symptoms, no matter how uncomfortable they are, represent the body’s attempt to restore itself to health. Instead of looking upon the symptoms as something wrong which must be set right, we see them as signs of the way the body as a whole is attempting to heal itself. Instead of trying to stop the superficial problem with suppressants, as conventional medicine does, a homeopath will give a remedy that will cause the problem in a healthy person, and thus stimulate the ill body to restore itself.

Second, we must see every case and symptom as that unique individual’s case or symptom. Our bodies are so different, and we each experience health problems in our own distinctive way. Yet conventional medicine acts as if all similar problems are alike, and offers a series of suppressive drugs or protocols for healing that only focuses on the symptoms at hand and not the cause. Homeopathy looks for a substance or remedy that will heal that individual person.

It’s interesting because homeopathy is, by conventional standards, kind of weird, but by the understanding of quantum mechanics it becomes based on hard science.”

Dr. Bruce Lipton

Finally, we need to view homeopathy from more than a chemical sense. Proponents of homeopathy state that the dilution of a plant extract or chemical to a certain point, such as homeopathic remedies are diluted, leaves the extract or chemical untraceable and therefore useless. But this is not the way to view homeopathy, as it is the process of dilution and the information contained in the dilution that makes homeopathy work.

Although validation and the effectiveness can be linked to hundreds of years ago when Dr. Samuel Hanhemann conducted experiments and research of his own on the efficacy of homeopathic remedies, more contemporary research is arising that proves the validation of homeopathy and its usefulness in modern medicine.

Homeopathic medicines are manufactured by repeatedly diluting and succussing a preparation of the original substance, mainly plants, and minerals, in water and alcohol. Validation of the potency of homeopathics and the dilution process can now be witnessed through the research of Shui Yin Lo, a former visiting associate professor in the chemistry department at California Institute of Technology. Lo made a discovery that water when combined with a substance and vigorously shaken, begins to cluster. These clusters grow bigger and stronger as dilution and shaking (succussion) continues. The clusters start to assume a form that mimics the structure of the original substance itself, so even though the chemical can no longer be detected in a chemical sense, its “image” and information is there, taken on by the water molecules. This discovery validates the “potentized” theory behind homeopathics and its efficacy.

In addition, the preservation of specific information within water has been scientifically researched. Water molecules themselves serve as information carriers due to their special geometric composition and the resulting combination of patterns that often takes on a spiral form that binds around ions, enzymes, and other active electromagnetic substances. The existence of “water geometry” as well as water’s stability, even after it has been converted into steam, was proven in both the University of Pennsylvania and Berkeley University studies. These scientific findings give a proper explanation of the vast health benefits of homeopathy.

Behind the Science

Science & Safety

Research by Dr. Jacques Benveniste empirically observed that highly diluted biological agents (i.e. in the absence of any physical molecules) triggered relevant biological systems. In his paper published in Nature, he reported that white blood cells called basophils, which aid in the regulation of the body’s response to allergens, can be activated to produce an immune response by solutions of antibodies that have been diluted so far that they contain none of these original molecules at all. Additionally, the paper noted, “Water could act as a ‘template’ for the [antibody] molecule, for example by an infinite hydrogen-bonded network, or electric and magnetic fields.” Newsweek picked up on the paper with an article entitled “Homeopathy finds scientific support“.

An explanation of how ‘ultramolecular’ dilutions work is that water is capable of storing information relating to substances with which it has previously been in contact. Recent research on hydrogen bonds in water provides some support for this ‘memory’ theory. The Swiss chemist, Louis Rey, found that the structure of hydrogen bonds in homeopathic dilutions of salt solutions is very different from that in pure water. He reached the conclusion that the phenomenon results from the vigorous shaking of solutions that takes place during homeopathic ‘succussion’. Moreover, using the laboratory technique called spectroscopy, other researchers have found that different homeopathic medicines and different dilutions of the same medicine can be distinguished from each other, even though all should contain nothing but water.

No harmful effects have been observed in the use of homeopathy in thousands of cases spanning hundreds of years. Today, the World Health Organization recognizes homeopathy as “the second largest therapeutic system in use in the world.” Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and given in such small doses that they don’t cause any side effects.

Two professors of chemistry measured the amount of heat emanating from plain double-distilled water and compared that with double-distilled water in which a substance was placed. Both the control water and the treated water underwent consecutive dilution between one to thirty times, with vigorous shaking in-between each dilution, which represents the common pharmacological method in which homeopathic medicines are made. The researchers conducted over 500 experiments, approximately half of which were made with double-distilled water that was mixed with a specific acid and base substance and half were in the control group of only double-distilled water. The researchers found that 92% of the test solutions with the added acid or base substance had higher than expected heat emanating from them (sodium chloride was one of the salt substances and a type of vinegar was one of the acid substances tested).

In one study, Dr. David Taylor Reilly and his colleagues compared the effects of a homeopathic hay-fever remedy with a placebo. In this double-blind controlled study, Dr. Reilly found that those who received the homeopathic remedy had six times fewer symptoms and were able to cut their use of antihistamines in half.

Jennifer Jacobs, M.D., led a study that was conducted in Nicaragua and included eighty-one children with acute diarrhea. All the children received standard anti dehydration treatment for diarrhea, consisting of water containing salt and sugar. In addition, half the children received homeopathic treatment and half received a placebo. The study confirmed homeopathy’s effectiveness: the recovery time for children receiving homeopathic treatment was 20% faster than those receiving the placebo, reducing the bout of diarrhea by one day. These results are heartening because diarrhea is the leading cause of death in developing countries such as Nicaragua.

Introduction to Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is exclusively made from plants and is the oldest and still the most widely used system of medicine in the world today. Uses of herbal medicine (also known as Phytotherapy) has been found in all societies and is common to all cultures. Phytotherapy applies scientific research and the highest professional standards to the practice of herbal medicine and encourages and adapts to recent worldwide growth in scientific information on plant drugs and their effective and safe use.

In today’s industrial age, harmful toxins and chemicals are produced as a result of our genetically modified, massed produced, economically driven society. These byproducts infiltrate the environment and consequently cause long-lasting ailments and detriment to the world’s population. While the industrial age has provided for a better overall lifestyle, we do have a choice when it comes to the treatments necessary to have a healthier life. Connecting natural resources with medicinal remedies has been a proven alternative to more current approaches. Nearly 80% of Asian and African countries are using herbal medicines for some aspect of primary health care (as estimated by WHO).

Phytotherapy medicines differ from plant-derived medicines in standard pharmacology. Where standard pharmacology isolates an active compound from a given plant, phytotherapy aims to preserve the complexity of substances from a given plant with relatively less processing while maintaining effectiveness and safety. The study of plants for medicinal purposes led to the deriving of certain compounds used within pharmaceuticals.

Documented herbal remedies from plants to treat diseases dates back over 5,000 years. Today, nearly one-third of Americans use herbs to treat many conditions, such as allergies, asthma, eczema, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine, menopausal symptoms, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and cancer, and many more.

Benefits of Herbal Medicine

Clinical experience has shown that herbal medicine may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:

  • Utilizes the body’s natural healing process for treating conditions.
  • Known as a synergistic approach to health care, phytotherapy combines the old and the new, ancient and modern, and science and nature.
  • Phytotherapy works to increase immunity, better handle stress (adaptogens or adaptogenic herbs), and regenerate the body by supporting optimal functioning.

How Herbal Medicine Works

In phytotherapy, plant medicines are selected mainly to stimulate or strengthen the body’s normal functions, and so help the body heal itself. Plant or botanical medicines contain many ingredients and may have several simultaneous therapeutic biochemical actions in the body. Any herbal medicine prescribed to the patient may be a combination of plants chosen for the therapeutic actions required to treat that individual.

Each herb or plant used in phytotherapy have active ingredients, chemicals or constituents that have an effect on the body. For example, hypericin and hyperforin are considered to be the active ingredients in the herb St. John’s wort, although the benefits of St. John’s wort is not just a result of these two chemicals, but of a synergistic interaction between these two chemicals and a host of other naturally occurring chemicals found in the herb. Pharmaceutical companies often isolate an active chemical ingredient from an herb and produce a synthetic replicate of the chemical to place it into a drug. The end result of this process is a powerful drug with many side-effects, but without the benefits of the synergistic interactions of the herb’s original ingredients.

Drugs of plant origin still account for a respectable percentage of doctors’ prescriptions, and for a number of reasons, research interest in natural pharmaceuticals is again on the upswing.”

As Andrew Weil, MD, founder, professor, and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona states, ““Botany and medicine have been the closest of friends and the most distant of strangers. Two hundred years ago, anyone wishing to be a physician had to study botany, because most medical prescriptions were made from plants. Today it is unheard of for premedical students to major in botany, and interactions between the two fields are minimal. Yet drugs of plant origin still account for a respectable percentage of doctors’ prescriptions, and for a number of reasons, research interest in natural pharmaceuticals is again on the upswing.”

Phytotherapy provides a functional approach to healing – using cell signaling to affect a patient’s body early on in the disease process. Responses within cells that originate from the plant are known as phytocrines – the bioactive molecules in plants that share features with human hormones and “connect” with the endocrine system. In this respect, certain phytotherapeutic supplements aid in promoting or countering actions similar to the hormones in a patient’s system.

Another principle key to phytotherapeutic action is an adaptogenic effect, in which the patient’s body responds to and uses plant molecules in various ways, depending on how much and in what proportions are needed in regulating and metabolizing them. This is in stark contrast with pharmaceutical intervention, which can leave the body with too much or too little of the hormone or medication on board, which can ultimately result in severe vulnerability and further dysfunction.

Behind the Science

Science & Safety

Herbs are used worldwide to treat conditions and diseases, and many studies prove their efficacy. In fact, of the 177 drugs approved worldwide for the treatment of cancer, more than 70 percent are based on natural products/herbs/plants.

Herbal medicine is considered natural and safe, however, when taking herbal medicines, you may consider possible interactions with other medications. For example, mixing herbs and drugs that have similar actions such as anticoagulant drugs with ginkgo, a natural blood thinner; the herb valerian, a sedative, shouldn’t be mixed with prescription sleeping pills.
